I’m so excited (and a bit nervous!) to finally share some big news: my debut children’s novel, Seven: Distracted Detective, is officially launching!
This contemporary crime story for readers aged 9-12 has been a long time in the making, and I can hardly believe that soon you’ll be able to meet Seven. Can a distracted detective solve a mystery?
Seven: Distracted Detective began as an idea scribbled on a train in my notebook back in 2021 (I think!) - a story about truth, friendship and understanding that everyone has their own superpower. It’s set in a fictional North East school, inspired by the places and people I’ve met while living here.
When the story won the Hachette Children’s Novel Award at the Northern Writers’ Awards 2023, I was over the moon. To see it now become a real book - published under my own imprint, Aralyn Press - feels both surreal and special. The project has also been supported by Arts Council England’s Developing Your Creative Practice scheme, which has helped me take the leap into independent publishing.
The cover design has been a true North East collaboration. I’ve been lucky enough to work with local creatives Lily Mae Kroese and Megan Watson, whose illustration and design skills have brought Seven’s character and energy to life.
Here’s a little taster…
Hi, I’m Seven.
And I’m 13. (Yeah, my name can be confusing.)
So, here’s the thing. Mr O, our caretaker at Riverside Academy, is gone. Maybe I was the last person to see him, out on the school field, and he didn’t look good. Now, he’s missing. And I have his keys.
Hang on, Mam’s calling, again…
Seven: Distracted Detective is perfect for middle-grade readers who love solving puzzles, spotting clues and following a mystery full of twists.
As New Writing North said:
“Seven: Distracted Detective stands out for its confidence, imagination, originality and authentic voice.”
Seven: Distracted Detective will be available in paperback and eBook from 13th November 2025 from online retailers, with a limited number of signed copies available from me directly. And you should be able to request a copy through your local bookshop too! And pre-orders are live now on The Great British Bookshop and Amazon.
I’m also discussing options for a book launch event or events – keep an eye on my news page and social media for all the details.
I couldn’t have made this happen without the encouragement of so many brilliant people - mentors, friends, and readers who’ve believed in the story from the very start.
I hope Seven makes you laugh, think, and maybe even feel inspired to do a little detective work of your own.
Here’s to distracted detectives everywhere!
